Presentation and discussion
The Sámi are often referred to as Europe’s “forgotten people.” With Sápmi, their traditional homeland, divided between four nation-states – Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia – the Sámi have experienced the profound oppression that characterize the fate of indigenous people worldwide. But they have also shown strong resilience, defending their identity and their territories. In recent years, they’ve been organizing against “green colonialism,” the ongoing exploitation of their lands in the name of a “green transition” serving capitalism’s interest. Gabriel Kuhn, author of Liberating Sápmi: Indigenous Resistance in Europe’s Far North sketches Sápmi’s political history and anticolonial struggles, and discusses solidarity movements by non-indigenous activists.
